Have you ever wondered why mosquitoes bite some people more than others?
Are you a mosquito magnet? If you go hiking with a group of friends, are you the only one walking home with a multitude of 'squito welts?
Thankfully, I am one of the lucky ones. I seem to be all but invisible to the little buggers. The first time I remember noticing a mosquito bite on me was when I was a teen. My ex husband, on the other hand, is not so lucky. Every time we would go hiking, he would be covered in mosquito bites, and I would be untouched. Not only were mosquitos attracted to him, but spiders and bees as well. I have never been spider bitten or bee stung, with the exception of the stepping on bees. My ex was regularly bee stung and spider bitten, even though I was outdoors much more often than he.
According to Web Md , 1 in 10 people are "highly attractive" to mosquitoes. So, why do mosquitos enjoy dining on some victims more than others? Well, genetics account for 85% of our attractiveness to mosquitos. Scientists are just beginning to scratch the surface of what exactly attracts them, but they do know that excess levels of steroids and cholesterol on the skin surface do so. That doesn't necessarily mean higher overall levels of cholesterol; it may just indicate bodies that are more efficient at processing cholesterol.
Another attractive element is production of carbon dioxide . Since larger people produce more carbon dioxide when they exhale, they are especially prone to bites. Pregnant women are more susceptible as well, since they produce significantly more carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide factor also helps explain why small children are not bitten as often as adults.
Movement and heat are also known to attract these little pests, so the next time you're at a backyard bbq, you might do well to lounge by the pool instead of playing football with the boys.

Interesting Mosquito Facts
- Mosquitos do not technically bite, since they don't have teeth.
- Only female mosquitoes "bite." Our blood is not a staple of their diet. It is only needed to produce healthy eggs. Sugar from flowers and juices is their main source of energy.
- Mosquitoes cannot transmit HIV, although they CAN transmit other potentially fatal diseases, such as malaria.
Parting notes: It is commonly believed that people who eat a lot of sugar are more prone to bites. Also, bananas are supposed culprits. However, if these rumors were true, I would be eaten alive since I love both!
So, how do scientists gather all of this data? By conducting studies with volunteers and letting mosquitoes bite them. I'm all for donating blood, but for mosquitoes? Not as much.

OMG! I must a high carbon dioxide emitter because I'm a mosquito magnet. I'm also allergic so every bit swells to hug proportions.
P.S. I just love the way your blog's appearnace has changed. It's really beautiful and easy to read and navigate now.
Eating raw garlic will keep most of the mosquitoes away if you attract them.
TT, You have a double whammy-a magnet & allergic. Thanks for the compliment. My old layout was awful.
Jeff,
I wouldn't doubt it. It'll keep people away, that's for sure.
Great information. My youngest son is a spider/mosquito magnet. It's nice to understand some of the science behind the welts.
Rob,
I feel for the poor little guy. It's a good thing my son is not a magnet. He is 6 years old and absolutely obsessed with catching bugs and learning about them. He could give an entomologist some healthy competition.
I am most definitely a mosquito magnet whereas my hubby isn't.
Maybe it is the amount of beer he consumes?? LOL
Blackflies love me too Nasty critters
Wendy,
I was reading that yeast (such as in beer) repels mosquitoes. Maybe you should belly up to the bar with your husband more often :)
Gee, thanks Robin. On the same day you wrote this post, I gotten bitten several times. I think you cursed me ;)
Hi nice blog.
I know when I lived in Fayetteville NC it was bad I couldn't even work on my bike in the yard in the afternoon they came and they didn't care who you were. When those Moms going looking for blood your're done.
Fayetteville...sweet. Mosquitoes are really pesky in NC because the air is so humid and sticky.
Wigwam,
Sorry for the curse. Be sure you don't read my upcoming post on mountain lion attacks ;)
Hi! Found your blog via Wigwams blog. I have to be one of those people who attract mosquitos. My bf never gets bitten while I spend the entire time smacking myself in the face! And all this time I thought it was because I had such a sweet disposition.

I get eaten alive by mosquitoes here in Mississippi. I rarely eat sugar, but I do exhale massive quantities of carbon dioxide gas haha!
Fortunately, I am not a mosquito favorite, as I now live in a malaria prone area for the moment (Liberia). I still take my meds though.
I'm a big guy who runs hot who eats bananas daily. I'm bug bait.
Very interesting! I'm giving this post a thumbs up on stumble. I'm also going to get a few beers in me and run around outside naked just to test the theory. Actually, I run around outside naked every time I drink. It's futile to try and avoid so I might as well just say I'm going to do it for science and look scholarly.
That is one of the most helpful blog posts I have ever read. I'm from the deep south myself, and mosquitos certainly are a big part of daily life down here.
hmmm..........things to keep in mind at the cottage
hi!there!nyc blog..
I'm in Louisiana, so, this post certainly caught my attention.
I'm in Bandung, West Java - Indonesia, maybe Mosquito loves me !!.
Hey, I'm just catching up on my blogroll after my holidays.
I'm a total mosquito magnet, I think over the last month I probably suffered about 30 bites. I have no idea why though. I'm always cold, I don't like sugar and I'm very petite so the carbon dioxide thing doesn't work. And still when I'm sitting somewhere mosquito's will miraculously appear from nowhere to bite me. My boyfriend calls me the best mosquito repellent he's ever had.
I'm a mosquito magnet and I HATE it.. People think im just being a bitch but they have no idea wat its like getting attacked but every bug known tho man.. Id like to add this tho.. when i get really drunk they dont go anywhere near me.. LOL i guess they know when ur blood is contaminated
just got back from corfu, i got bit to death my husband got a couple,iv been on antibiotics for two weeks, someone said jungle spray works, but im to frightend to go back and see if it works ha ha.i am from dorset england.
Great blog! Great articles!
Not exactly a mosquito magnet, but there's this one kind of mosquito that tends to bite everyone (well, not bite, but suck blood out of), and at the same time transmit this nasty disease.
Hey hey! New Lay-out! Nice! By the way the man morph pic of you scared me a bit lol! Mosquito bites so common here in my country. My daughter such a magnet too! She got lots of scars scratching their bites good thing she not contacted the deadly disease this pest brings... dengue. It claimed so many lives here already.
I was surfing the web regarding this strange phenomenon of being bitten vs not bitten and stumbled across this blog (great info). I'm one of those lucky ones that is NEVER bitten where as my poor boyfriend is a daily snack for the little buggers. I take tons of vitamins B and others and used to take brewers yeast and I can tell you it must work since they completely leave me alone even when I lived in Hawaii and regularly hiked the jungles. good luck!
I was searching for a solution to the problem of getting bit like I have snack written on my forehead. The other day I was in my back yard showing the tree trimmer where to cut and I was only there for 3 minutes about, and low and behold my legs started stinging furiously. By the time I got to the front yard driveway my legs were on fire and i had to dowse them with peroxide and then put meat tenderizer paste on them to draw out the venom. It doesn't look pretty but has worked my whole life. You buy meat tenderizer and add a couple of drops of water until it is a paste and rub it wherever the bites appear. It takes away the itch in minute and because it's grainy it kind of satisfies the itch impulse when you are rubbing it on. You have to reapply a couple of of times per day though. It turned out I had been bitten 18 times in 3 minutes... holy moly. But after reading this it's good to know I'm not alone. I guess that helps a little bit.
