Who would have guessed that America's largest private home, a 175,000 square foot French chateau would exist in the mountains of North Carolina? It has been used as a filming location for several movies, such as:
Hannibal
Patch Adams
My Fellow Americans
Richie Rich
Mr. Destiny
Private Eyes
Being There
The Swan (Grace Kelly)
NC is the 2'nd most popular location for filming Hollywood movies. About a quarter of the people I know have been a movie extra at some point.
The home was built in 1895 by George Vanderbilt, a railroad tycoon, and has 250 rooms, 65 fireplaces, 43 bathrooms, 34 bedrooms, and three kitchens, all of which are contained in over four acres of floor space. I think the Vanderbilts must have run out of different types of rooms to create, because I noticed a large room filled with nothing but baskets, and another large room filled with vases. I don't think I would mind having that problem though.

Hi marlyms,
Thanks for the link, dear. I added yours as well. I'm doing excellent, and I hope you are too :)
Beautiful pictures -- I had no idea so many films had scenes shot there! I've been wanting to visit for a while now & I'm trying to convince my boyfriend to take a trip!
Wonder if that place belongs to Anderson Cooper now?! He is a Vanderbilt.
Janelle,
It's a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I hope you get to visit. Just tell your boyfriend there is free wine tasting!
Cupid,
Very interesting. I didn't know that. I knew I liked him, ha ha!
