The Curse of My Monkey Paw

People always regard monkeys as not that bright. Have you ever heard the insult "knuckle dragger" to refer to someone who is stupid? An incident that happened to me last night made me realize that we don't give our primate brothers enough credit. You try not having opposable thumbs and see how intelligent you appear. (By the way, in case someone points out to me that some primates do technically have opposable thumbs, in a practical sense they do not.)

How it Went Down

I took my two kids (ages 4 and 6) roller skating last night. I linked hands with my son to make an arch for my daughter to skate through. They enjoyed doing this so we did it a few times.

Then my daughter suggested I skate under their arms, so I crouched down and started to skate under when very unexpectedly I landed on my bottom with a thud and tried to catch myself with my hand.

I have no idea how falling just a few inches from a crouching position could hurt like hell, but it did. I am a fainter to the n'th degree (I will have to write a post about it sometime) so I became dizzy and started to black out although I did not completely faint. Falling on my ass in front of all of those people was embarrassing enough, so I'm thankful I didn't add fainting in the middle of the rink to it!

The Aftermath

I went to the doctor today. Luckily my bottom is not broken, but I do have a sprained thumb. I am feeling sympathetic to monkeys today since I am down one opposable thumb. There are certain things I cannot do with only one thumb such as opening jars. I cannot imagine what it would be like to suddenly have both thumbs cut off.

Steph,
It did hurt, but I'm just glad I didn't break my tail bone. I know a guy who broke his tail bone sledding, and his wife broke hers during childbirth (ouch!) You know what they say, "The couple that breaks their tail bones together..."

Hey Calais,

My boys and I love to skate. Can't say I broke anything, but like hepp2 I broke my finger skiing. I'm a single dad with two boys: 10 and 12. You've got some great times ahead of you with your two!

Bali,

Damn, my sign is a horse. Let me know when you're running the world...maybe you'll make me deputy prime minister or something similar:)

Hepp,
I hope you're able to use your thumb well now. The idea of getting a screw put in makes me queasy...

Robert,
I have never been skiing and thanks to you and Hepp, I don't think that will ever change! I hope your thumb's okay now. Yes, my kids are at a great age, but my daughter will be starting school not this fall, but next fall (sniffle, sniffle).
